There are quite a few steps in flushing a water heater, and if not done correctly it may cause damage to your home and require costly repairs. Steps include, but are not limited to, turning off the gas or electric supply, shutting off the water supply, turning on the hot water faucet and leaving it on while the draining is happening, attach the hose to the drain valve tightly, and run the hose to the drain, open the drain valve and allow the water to drain, flush the water tank by opening the cold water valve, close the drain valve and fill up the water tank, and finally power back on the water heater. Flushing a water heater should take about an hour to complete and should be done once a year.
Common Problems with Water Heaters
A common problem with water heaters may be the water temperature is either too hot or too cold, this can usually be fixed by adjusting the thermostat. Leaks can also occur from a stuck valve, incorrect water pressure, or a loose bolt. Another problem is if your water becomes discolored, it may have rust corrosion on the inner lining of the tank, which may be fixed by replacing the anode rod, if not you will need to replace the entire water heater. Any concerns you are unsure of, you should contact a professional plumber immediately to prevent any further damage.
