How is Backflow Testing Done?

Backflow is when excess pressure causes wastewater to flow into the fresh water supply. Backflow testing is done by a plumbing professional who closes valves and checks for signs of damage or deterioration. Most tests can be completed in 30 minutes or less unless a repair is needed. Water must be shut down before the test is performed and kept off for the duration of the test. Plumbing professionals will be able to detect changes in gauge movement, water leaks, and other signs that could lead to problems in the plumbing system.

How Often Should Backflow Testing be Done?

Backflow protectors in residential properties are required to be checked by a certified backflow tester every 3 years. RPZ valves are used to keep contamination out of the water supply and need to be tested annually and replaced every 5 years. Annual backflow tests are required to ensure dirty water doesn’t creep into the homes drinking water and pose health risks to the residents. Backflow testing may need to be done more frequently under certain area conditions such as problems with water quality.
